Texas State Students Discuss the Pros and Cons of Study Abroad Programs

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Students at Texas State University believe that there are pros and cons when it comes to study abroad programs. Students believe the programs are beneficial, but come with a cost.

Many students said that study abroad programs are great opportunities to learn about different cultures and gain perspective.

“I don’t think there can be a downside,” said Kelsey Stepney, senior education major. “It’s all beneficial because you can take another culture and bring it to your own classroom, and that widens the children’s perspective.”

Kaylee Ware, a public relations major, agrees with Stepney.

"Traveling is important and fun, and you learn a lot from other cultures."

Many students believe that there are downsides to study abroad programs as well.

“If it was the cost of tuition here, I would do it,” said Justin LeFrance, a computer science major. “Anything more than that it is not worth it.”

Alex Plunkett, an exercise and sports science major, also agrees.

“Study abroad is pretty expensive.”

Giulia Gasponi, a finance major, believes that the high costs of study abroad programs can lead to other anxieties for some students.

“A lot of students have obligations, such as rent,” said Gasponi. “Even if they have to pay for this program, they need to find a way to pay for rent for the months that they are gone. They also may experience emotional trauma from being so far away from home."

Other than cost, one student’s dissatisfaction with study abroad programs included feeling limited to where she could travel.

“I kind of wish there were more places you could go for study abroad,” said Bre Gilpin, an education major. “Education majors only go to South America, but I want to go to Europe.”
