SAN MARCOS, Texas – On Monday, lecturer Holly Wise announced
that the Texas State Global News Team will embed with the Department of
Respiratory Care on a service learning trip to Guyana in January.
This year’s Global News Team will consist of 5 students from
the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The trip will begin on Jan. 2,
2017 and will last 11 days. Previous trips for the team included Nicaragua and
South Africa.
On these service learning trips, the team will be immersed
in the communities that they will serve in and produce multimedia content to
tell the stories of the native people as well as the students and faculty
members that volunteer.
Wise recounts a story from the Global News Team’s 2016 trip
where her student used her experiences and content to create a children’s
novel. The book was translated into Spanish and copies were brought back to the
Nicaraguan community in 2017.
“That was definitely a highlight for me to see my students
using their talent and skills in a way that will leave a lasting impression on
these communities,” Wise said.
In addition to telling these stories, students learn how to
be more comfortable interviewing, how to gather news content and discern
newsworthiness. These students then post their work on the Global News Team’s
website and social media platforms.
“One thing that I’m hoping for all of my students is that
they gain a global perspective of their work,” Wise says. “I also want them to
learn and hope that they learn how to connect with people who are different
from them.”
While the application process for the 2018 trip to Guyana is
closed, Wise suggests students contact her for further information about future
trips.
