SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University lecturer Holly
Wise held a conference on Monday that informed mass communication students of
the Texas State Global News
Team’s study abroad program.
Wise and five students from the school of journalism and
mass communication will be travelling with a group from the department of
respiratory care for an 11-day stay in the South American country of Guyana in
January of 2018. Respiratory care students will host a health clinic for locals
while those from SJMC report on the experience.
Holly
Wise is a sponsor of the program and travels with SJMC students as a
faculty member. She has helped spearhead the program and has traveled with the
Global News Team since its conception.
“The students of the
Global News Team embed with service-learning trips from Texas State
specifically to tell the stories of the communities that are being served as
well as the students and faculty who are volunteering,” said Holly Wise during
her presentation. “It’s about having fun and connecting with the community on a
different level.”
The trip offers two classes for credit, Multimedia
Journalism (MC 4356H) and Feature Writing (MC 4382L). Texas State will bill the
credit hours separately from the cost of the trip.
The study abroad program will cost students close to $3,000.
The price includes airfare, transportation, group excursions, health insurance,
lodging, an application fee and 2 meals per day. Scholarships
and other funding options are available to students.
The Global News Team was founded in 2015 and travelled to
Nicaragua with the students from the department of nursing for their first trip
in 2016. The Global News Team returned with the department of nursing in 2017.
A date nor destination has been set for the 2019 expedition
but students interested can keep up to date on SJMC’s study abroad
page.
