SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Global News Team is offering an opportunity to travel abroad for SJMC students. On Monday, Holly Wise, the SJMC lecturer in charge of the team, talked about the program and its January trip to Guyana.

The Global News Team is a study abroad program for SJMC students. In the last two years, the team has traveled with the St. David School of Nursing to Nicaragua to cover stories about the nursing students and the people they help.

Wise talked about what is expected from students in the Global News Team during their trip.

“You’re working,” said Wise. “While the nursing students are setting up the clinics, my students, my team [is] running around taking photos, videos, interviewing patients [and] nursing students.”

Wise said that when the team gets back to the hotel the real work starts. There they begin edit photos, video, stories and social media post for the day. They then plan out what each of them will be doing for the next day. This was their daily routine for two weeks.

Despite the amount of work that the Global News Team has to accomplish each day, Wise has been happy with the groups he has had so far.

“I am very proud of my team and the work they have accomplished over the last two years,” said Wise.

Wise, who has run the program for two years, has worked with several different news organizations and even founded VoiceBox Media, an outlet that highlights social programs and how people who are solving social problems.

This year the team will travel with the Department of Respiratory Care to Guyana to document the respiratory student’s work. There the respiratory students will be giving respiratory therapy to patients and asthma screening to high school students.

To be a part of the Global News Team students must go through a formal application process. Students that applied for the team had to have had some experience in news production. Recruitment for the next trip, which will take place Jan. 2-13, 2018, has already ended.

Students that are interested in the program are encouraged to keep an eye on the Global Team’s Facebook page and the Texas State Study Abroad page. You can also send an e-mail to Holly Wise at hlw24@txstate.edu for more information about the program.
