The Texas State Global News Team Heads to Guyana

By: Collin Jones

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State Global News Team will take their third trip in January 2018. This year they will be traveling to Guyana.

Holly Wise, a lecturer at Texas State University in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, announced at a news conference Monday that the team will head to Guyana in South America. The team will partner with the Texas State Department of Respiratory Care students and will cover the work they do for the locals for the duration of the trip, which is a little over two weeks.

Team members will gain a better understanding of other cultures by emerging themselves within the communities they travel too, while also getting a global perspective of their work.

“One thing I am hoping for all of my students is that they gain a global perspective of their work and also want them to learn how to connect with people that are different from them, people who have huts instead of houses, who cook over an open fire with no electricity, but once you see these people you realize that their life is fulfilled,” said Wise.

The program did its first coverage in 2016 where they traveled with the Texas State's St. David’s Nursing students to Nicaragua and have done that for two consecutive years. Holly wants to cover multiple service groups who go on trips here at Texas State University, which is why the upcoming trip is with a different nursing group, with a new destination.

This program is different from other study abroad programs, primarily because instead of being in a classroom they are in the community working. It is a fun trip, but it is a work trip.

Wise has worked in journalism for a significant amount of her career, specifically service-oriented jobs, making her the perfect candidate to lead the program.

“My background in journalism has always been service oriented, I have always been interested, and a lot of my careers have spent covering social justice issues abroad and also in the United States, and so I am always looking for opportunities to not only use my skills in that way but then also inspire students to become involved in the world,” said Wise.

Recruitment for the trip has already come to an end, and Wise will be selecting only five students to attend. The program cost $2,804 for the students, and it is not included in their tuition. Anyone who wishes to participate in the future should reach out to Holly for information, although, a future trip has not yet been planned.
