SAN
MARCOS, Texas ― The Texas State Global News Team will travel to Guyana
in January 2018. Five mass communication students will travel with five
respiratory care students to South America for 11 days.
At
a news conference held Monday, Holly Wise, a lecturer at Texas State
University, shared that she would be heading on her third study abroad trip. Wise
and her team took their first trip in 2016. The program allows mass communication
students to engage in tasks amongst themselves and others.
Wise
says there are benefits to gain from the study abroad trips. She says that most
of the benefits are going to depend on the person because they are all personal
advantages. She also hopes students learn more about their work and the
community they are in.
“One
thing that I am hoping for all my students is that they gain a global perspective of
their work. I also want them to learn how to and hope that they learn how to connect
with people who are different from them,” Wise said.
The
study abroad program cost $2,804. This price does not include student’s tuition
for the semester. However, it does include airfare, meals, lodging, health
insurance, application fee to the university and application fee to the organization
students will be traveling with.
The trip is service oriented. This means students are embedded and immersed
in the local community.
“The
students of the Global News Team embed with service learning trips from Texas
State specifically to tell the stories of the community that are being served
as well as the students and faculty who are volunteering,” Wise said.
Although
the trip is service oriented, it is not all work and no play. There are two
recreational days where the teams may go to the beach or resort of some kind of
resort and have fun.
