SAN MARCOS, Texas — At a news conference on Monday, the Texas State Global News Team study abroad trip was announced for January 2018. This year’s trip is going to take place in Guyana, an 11 day trip that will be in January, 2018. will be following the respiratory care students this year while they help out communities in need.

Holly Wise, A Texas State lecturer and the faculty leader of the Global News Team, is also responsible for organizing the news team’s trips. She describes what journalism students can expect

to do while working in another country.
“We are editing photos, writing Facebook post for our social media outlets…organizing our strategy
for what our next day will be like and for what the stories will be like,” Wise said.

Students also receive personal benefits from these trips. Wise discussed what students can gain from the experiences working with a community from a journalist’s point of view.
“I hope they gain a global perspective of their work, I also want them to learn how to connect with people that are different from them; who have huts as houses, who cook over an open fire with no
electricity. Also I hope my students walk away with greater skill sets interviewing people,” Wise said.

The Global News Team has traveled to Nicaragua the past 2 years, working with the Texas State nursing students on their service learning trips. This is the first year the program is going to Guyana
while working with respiratory care.

Wise hopes to have more trips and more opportunities for students in the coming years visiting and working with different people around the world.
“I want to be able to take students on two trips a year in the coming years. Maybe a spring trip and a fall trip. Another idea that I have is to take students to India for a summer and partner with the university in India,” Wise said.

More information about past and future trips can be found on the Texas State Study Abroad website or follow the Texas State Global News Team on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
