SAN
MARCOS, Texas — The Career Services office will host a career fair welcoming 22
employers such as iHeartMedia and DISH Network. The event will take place
Thursday, Feb. 22 at the LBJ Student Center Ballroom from noon to 4 p.m.
Nicole
Hengst, a lecturer at Texas State University, said students and alumni are
invited to attend although a school id or id number would be required. Though
she did emphasize that the focus for this employment fair would be in the field
of Mass Communications.
Hengst
gave hints for those considering attending which were: dress appropriate, bring
professional resumes and/or business cards, research the companies, practice
your pitch, be confident but not over confident and use all that Career
Services has to offer.
Even
though alumni are welcomed, Hengst noted that it is never too early to begin
blazing a career path. She said it is important to contact services quickly to
best utilize resources such as searching for internships and companies that are
best suited for your major and/or career path in addition to help on resume and
interview skills.
“There
are resources available that are prior to you getting the internship,” said
Hengst.
Hengst
said that the person is their own brand and they need to pitch themself to the employer.
One way to do that is to create an elevator pitch, which is short statement
about who you are as job seeker, what you’re looking for and what you have to
offer.
“The
employer should leave the conversation thinking ‘I need this person my team,’” said
Hengst.
There
is still time to stop by Career Services before noon on Thursday for any last
minute assistance. Download the app Career Fair Plus, for smartphones, to stay
up-to-date on all the latest information.
