SAN MARCOS,
Texas – Lecturer Nicole Hengst announced a Mass Communication career fair will
take place this Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 at the LBJ Ballroom for students of all
majors to attend.
The career fair
begins at noon – 4p.m. and 19 different companies will be attending. Companies
will be offering part time jobs, full time jobs and internships for positions
such as reporter, anchor, sales account manager and 50 other individual job
titles. According to Hengst’s announcement students are recommended to dress
business casual or business formal, bring their resume and their confidence.
Hengst provided
several tips for students before, during and after the career fair. Students
can come prepared by taking advantage of career services such as borrowing
business clothes or allowing career services to review student’s resume. Hengst
said while at a company’s booth students should ask about the company, job
positions within a certain job title are available, the company’s philanthropy
and then ask to leave a resume.
“It’s an introduction
to get the ball rolling for future interviews,” said Hengst.
After the career
fair, Hengst said companies will often reach out to anyone who gives them a
resume, but students should get in contact employers first to set the frame
work for a future relationship.
“Email them
first and let them know it was really exciting to meet them and let them know
what position they are interested in if they are still hiring for that
positions and what the next hiring steps might be,” said Hengst.
Hengst said gaining
work experience while completing a degree will set students up for success upon
graduation.
“When you
get out because it is going to be looked at as actual work experience plus this
education. You’re going to be walking in not into just entry level position,
but slightly higher level positions,” said Hengst.
Hengst said the career
fair is an opportunity for students to practice talking with employers and gain
confidence in their presentation skills.
“I really hope
that students get more confident when talking to employers so even if you don’t
land an internship or one of these jobs from the fair it’s just about getting
more confident talking to people and presenting yourself and really promoting
your own brand,” says Hengst.
According to
Ralph Leal from Career Services, depending on each fair 200 – 600 students
attend each fair. Each semester Student Career Services hosts several career
fairs, this semester there is 11 career fairs for a variety of job fields such
as STEM, health professions, criminal justice and all majors. For a full list
of upcoming career fair dates and times visit career services on Texas State’s website.
