SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State University’s career services announced their upcoming Mass Communication career fair. The event will be held this Thursday, Feb 22, in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom from noon - 4 p.m.
This particular
career fair is going to be focused on Mass Communication. All Texas State University
students and alumni are invited to attend and there is no cost for entry.
Regardless, students must swipe their ID and alumni can just show their drivers
license or remember their student ID number.
Nicole
Hengst, lecturer from the School of Journalism and Communication at Texas
State, gave out some tips on how to best prepare for attending a career fair at
a news conference.
“Dress
professionally, this is your first-time meeting someone and you don’t get a
second chance to make a good impression,” said Hengst. “Career services offers
the career closet. You can rent professional attire for extremely cheap,
sometimes just for the price of laundering those items when you’re done,” said
Hengst. You can also submit your resume alone for a career counselor to review
and critique within 48 hours.
Hengst
hopes that students learn how to be more confident when attending a career fair
and summarizes with what should be done after the fair is over.
“It’s
typical for employers to reach out to you. Beat them to the punch. Email them
first and let them know that it was exciting speaking with them and state what
positions you’re interested in,” said Hengst. “This gives employers a trigger
to be able to tell you what types of interviews are going on at the time, which
kind of gives you a framework for your next follow-up emails,” said Hengst.
Students
and alumni can check on third party websites for real employer reviews for any
of the companies and a complete list of the employers attending will also be
available in the Career Fair Plus App.
Come
meet 19 employers from various radio, television, PR and other communication
providers who will be seeking summer interns, part-time and full-time
employees. You can contact Texas State’s career services for more information
on how to better prepare.
